How to create a wall painting in your kid’s bedroom

A custom wall painting can make a kid’s bedroom super cozy and unique, and it’s especially fun if the whole family participates in coming up with the design and doing the painting. If you want to take on this adventure and paint a unique wall mural in your child’s bedroom, here is a step by step guide to my whole painting process.

My wall painting process for kid’s murals

  1. Choose a space where there is enough light as you’ll want to show off your beautiful mural. Consider the shape of the wall and the space you have available. If you are unsure, in a kid’s bedroom the best spot is usually above the bed.

  2. Take some time to about the design. I usually choose between a doodled design (lots of small icons) or a theme (it could be animals, space, unicorns…). If your kids are big enough, you can also ask them and even draw something together.

  3. While you are designing, think about the colors you want to use (I usually base my designs on the acrylic paints that are available at Montana and Molotow.)

  4. Put your design up on the wall with the help of a projector. Works like a charm! Put up the guidelines with a pencil so that you know where to paint once the projector is turned off.

  5. Don’t forget protecting the floor (I use this masker) and having some of the original paint at hand to cover up potential mistakes.

  6. While painting, try to go close to the pencil lines but don’t cover them. You will need those for the contours.

  7. Paint the black outlines to finalise your design.

  8. Celebrate, you did it!
